The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home. Aside from its practical purpose of food preparation, it is often the social hub of the home, where the family can gather and socialise, eat, and entertain. When considering a kitchen renovation, make sure you opt for a design layout as well as fittings and features that allow for an easy, fluid entertaining zone. Let’s discuss this further:
Design Layout Let’s assume you aren’t restricted by a bad design layout from the original kitchen. If you are, unfortunately you will probably need to spend some cash correcting this basic design flaw!
There are several ideal kitchen layouts, the most popular being the kitchen work triangle, where the points between the refrigerator, sink and stove should all be between 4 feet (1.2 m) and 9 feet (2.7 m). Note: The sum of all three sides of the triangle should be between 13 feet (4.0 m) and 26 feet (7.9 m). For an easy, smooth transition whilst working in the kitchen, aim for this golden kitchen work triangle.
Bench Top The kitchen benchtop can be tucked in along a wall in an L-shape, if space is an issue. For larger kitchens, however, a large expanse of benchtop can become an entertaining hub-slash-food prep zone. A tip is to choose a benchtop wider than the cabinetry underneath, to allow space for barstools. This invites visitors to make themselves at home! From a design perspective, other deluxe features of a high-end benchtop are- waterfall ends, a thickness of at least 40mm, and of course a pure stone benchtop, which is durable, looks fantastic and worth every dollar of its investment. The central, Island-style benchtop is also a key consideration as it creates a communal gathering spot. (Find more info on high-end finishes for your high-end kitchen in this post).
Concealed zones Being such a busy, productive and highly used space, the well-planned and executed kitchen will ideally incorporate storage solutions to keep clutter at bay. This may be as simple as a separate benchtop nook, complete with power points, to house phones and laptops, or as luxurious as a butlers pantry to house kitchen appliances. Keeping the kitchen open, clean and clutter-free will allow relaxed entertaining with plenty of space.
Lighting Good lighting is an essential component of a well-designed kitchen renovation. Making use of existing natural light, as well as providing good quality artificial light sources will ensure a better renovation result maximising light and space. Pendant lights, as well as downlights are a surefire way to illuminate the main benchtops. LED lighting strips are a current trend and are used to illuminate a certain area of the kitchen, add mood lighting and drama, and also enhancing the light source within the kitchen. A fantastic way to incorporate LED lighting is above the kitchen splashback to draw attention to your selected splashback. This works particularly well in a dark kitchen with a lighter area you wish to highlight.
